"ABC's"

What do we think about when we hear the question, "What is a Christian?"

What kind of words pop into our head? Maybe an image, type of clothes or personality comes to mind. What's interesting is that the word "Christian" appears in the Bible only three times (twice in Acts and once in 1 Peter). The phrases that come up over and over again are "a person in Christ" and "Christ in you."

This is because a Christian has a relationship with a living person, Jesus Christ, who lives in our hearts. Because our relationship with Christ is personal, you should treat it like any other friendship that we have. This means spending time with Him like we do with our friends.

By talking with Him (through prayer), reading of Him (in the Bible), enjoying His creation and more deeply experiencing His limitless love for you, your love for Him will grow and He will open abundant LIFE to you!

Being a person "in Christ," is as simple as the ABC's.

A - Admitting that we have wronged God through our words and actions and that without Him we are broken in sin.

B - Believing that Jesus died for us so that we would no longer be broken in sin and could have a more personal relationship with a living and breathing God!

C - Committing your life to Jesus, who is risen (which is what we celebrate at Easter) by asking Him into your heart. You respond to His love for you by giving Him all that you know about yourself. You give Him your complete trust and devotion.

When we open our hearts to Jesus and accept His love for us, He comes to us and lives within our hearts and begins to breathe LIFE through us from the inside out!

It is a HUGE thing to give your heart to anyone, let alone the Creator of the Universe! But remember that you can trust in His love for you! He love us so much that He gave His own life (on the cross) for us so that we could live life with Him!

In the book of John, Jesus calls himself "the vine" and He calls us "the branches" and if we "remain joined to" Him we will "bear fruit."

Now, let's break this down a little bit.

The Vine

The vine is the source that gives life to the branches! When the branches are not joined with the vine they do not bear fruit! Jesus calls Himself the vine because He is the source that gives us life!

The Branches

The branches are always in need of something to latch onto. Jesus calls us the "branches" in this verse because He knows that we are constantly looking for some place to belong, some one to latch onto or something to give us LIFE. The branches need the vine in order to have life and "bear fruit."

The Fruit

When the branches are joined with the vine, they then start to bloom and grow fruit. The fruit is the joy, love, peace and satisfaction that we get when we Commit our lives to Christ and join with Him.

When we begin our lives with Christ, He wants us more than anything for us to stay with Him. He's in it for the long haul. He gave up His own life so that we could have LIFE! When the branches "remain joined to" Christ they "bear fruit!"

Committing our lives to Christ, means we're in it for the long haul too! We're not just dipping our toes in, Jesus wants a full-fledge canon-ball!

QUESTION FOR THIS WEEK:

Can you think back to times when you knew God was real to you? A time when you saw something happen and knew that it wasn't by chance, but BY GOD. You may want to journal these for memory!

PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK:

Thank you, God, for making Yourself real to me and helping me know You. Father, please move to the center of my life and help me to grow in the knowledge and love of Your Son, Jesus Christ! In Your Name, Amen!
